Madelaine (Galloway)

Madelaine lies face down on the sand

She’s got one of those magazines

That tells you how to lose all this weight in 5 easy ways

"It’s all so far and away" is all she can say

Madelaine changes her name 3 times a day

She likes to be one obscure, and anyway

She knows how to soar high in the clouds

Everything is so far and so wide, or so she has found

And Madelaine likes to say she’s tired of waiting

Her plans all fall to the ground

Is this all of God’s making?

It’s all so far and away, or so she has found

And Madelaine likes to play and stay out all night

Under swirling lights (if she can)

Is this all of God’s making?

Writer’s notes

Madelaine is a fictitious young woman, based on a composite of 2 or 3 real people. She’s slightly unhappy with her lot, slightly overweight and a bit depressed. She goes off the rails now and again and flits in and out of a fantasy world. She likes hanging around nightclubs and going to parties but usually ends up alone – her relationships don’t seem to work out.

When the song was transferred from acoustic guitar to the full band it took on a powerful new life. The recorded version is a huge sound, probably one of the most ‘produced’ songs on the album. It also works well live.
