Driving (Galloway)

Heard you were driving off

Well I wouldn't if I were you

They say there's a storm up on the desert road

Pretty foul weather closing in

Blacktop melts in 33 degrees

The tape machine plays The Ghost In You

Is that a weird cloud shape, or a UFO?

Pretty strange weather closing in

Driving … heard you were driving

Heard you were driving, open quarterlight

Wind sheer lightning was never as calm

They say there's a storm up on the desert road

Pretty strange weather closing in

Writer's notes

Driving is a song I'd been trying to write for quite a time. It's basically inspired by driving through the stretch of road in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand. The ‘desert road' runs across the volcanic plateau surrounding the mountains Ruapehu and Ngaruahoe, which are active from time to time.

Driving though on a hot summer day can be a bit spooky, with the road tar melting and strange-looking clouds hanging over the mountains. If I let the mind wander I can just about see UFOs coming out of the clouds or hovering over the tussock grass. The weather often changes rapidly there and the person or people in the car (in the song) could possibly vanish mysteriously in a sudden summer storm. The Ghost in You is a song by the Psychedelic Furs that we had on in the car on one trip, and set the scene for the song …
